About AIR⁺ Surgical Mask with Active Carbon

What is active carbon and what does it do?
Active carbon (also known as activated carbon) is porous treated carbon that has a large surface area to remove contaminants through adsorption. It is used in the surgical mask to adsorb unwanted odors, pollutants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

What is adsorption and what does it mean?
Adsorption is the adhesion of gas molecules (adsorbate) onto a surface (adsorbent) – or simply put, the gas molecules stick to the surface. When carbon is activated, it has millions of micro pockets and pores, greatly increasing the surface area for adsorption of gas molecules. This is why active carbon is capable of capturing and locking in odors on its highly porous surface.

Is active carbon safe for use in masks?
The active carbon is safe and non-toxic. Active carbon is used in different fields from water purification to medicine.

What is the difference between AIR⁺ Surgical Mask and AIR⁺ Surgical Mask with Active Carbon?
The Surgical Mask with Active Carbon comes with activated carbon to adsorb unwanted odors, pollutants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Both surgical masks are medical grade, however the Surgical Mask with Active Carbon is tested to ASTM Level 3 Standard and is rated for protection against moderate to heavy exposure to aerosols, spray and fluids. The Surgical Mask is tested to ASTM Level 2 Standard and is rated for protection against light to moderate exposure to aerosols, spray and fluids.
